On December 15, 2010,  the employees of Pacific Disposal joined forces with Waste Connections in their annual Build a Bike event they do every year in our area.  They sent their vendors emails asking for donations and asked their employees to dig into their pockets to see how much they could raise to purchase helmets and bikes for the boys and girls club.

With the WCI promise that Waste Connections would match all employee donations, they were able to raise $2,405.00.  They worked with Kmart who graciously sold them bikes at the Black Friday sale price on all of their smaller bikes and gave them 20% off of the larger bikes and helmets.  They posted paper thermometers all over the office and filled them in every time a donation was made and had the challenge of venders verse’s employees.  The employees definitely won with the match from Waste Connections.

They were supposed to start building the bikes at 3:00 that Wednesday but the drivers that got off route earlier were to excited to get started and about 2:30. We had about 15 drivers ready with their own tools to get started.  Mind you, this was all volunteer labor and we had planned on another crew helping at 5:00 after they got off work (which this never happened).  The bikes were all put together by 3:40.  We had several groups of drivers working in teams assembling bikes and had a couple of guys from our shop as our quality control unit.  We never got a full count of how many people got to work on the bikes but between the cheer and food, a good time was had by all.  We delivered the bikes to the Lacey Boys and Girls Club and they were going to distribute  some of the bikes to their other three sites.
